Android : Here is an idea for those who want to put a little Brazilian flavor on their Christmas dinner.

"For a basic farofa with cassava flour, sauté onions and any meats together first, then add the rest of seasoning together with the flour." twitter.com/cculbertosborn…

Twitter Web App : In Brazil, fates change but Christmas farofa remains a stalwart. My The World pc last yr on holiday takes on the hallowed cassava garnish traces how Cold War cultural diplomacy brought turkey to the BR Christmas table & how Brazilians made it their own. pri.org/stories/2018-1…

Twitter Web App : Ok, so here's my year-end #journalism highlights thread, but with a slight twist: it's articles by other journalists whose work I admire. That'd be endless, so this is 10 pieces by 10 fellow women freelancers reporting in and on Latin America in English. In no particular order:

Twitter Web App : It's the end of the year, and I'm going to do a round-up inspired by Sandra Cuffe, highlighting the work by other women covering Latin America. This is just a glimpse at the wealth of quality journos in the region, but hopefully it´ll complement S´s list and the responses to it.

Twitter Web App : Thanks so much Zoe Sullivan for highlighting this piece and a whole thread of great reporting this year by women across Latin America. twitter.com/zoesullnews/st…

Android : Cool interactive piece by
Vox on 3 supertrees around the world-- in Brazil, Indonesia and Congo. Starts w/ the Amazon's Brazil nut tree, a.k.a. "the queen of the forest" vox.com/a/supertrees

Nuzzel : The barely-noticed migration of around 17,000 Brazilians through a single U.S. city over the past year is the latest target of the Trump administration’s effort to shut down asylum seekers. apne.ws/0XC8Dnb

Android : "Teachers and health workers nationwide continue to organise against the proposed education bans with the help of a coalition called Schools Without Censorship that tracks legislation."

Twitter Web App : The World Brazil’s response to its STD spikes contrasts to that in countries like the Philippines, where a rise in HIV recently prompted lawmakers to pass a bill encouraging sex education in schools. wsj.com/articles/hiv-c…

Twitter Web App : The World Still, BR’s religious right has won elections claiming left-wing educators aim to "sexualize" children in classroom, & bills banning sex ed are advancing nationwide. Even in places w/o formal prohibition, principals are using broad autonomy over sex ed curriculums to cut them.

Twitter Web App : The World The number of new HIV cases per year in Brazilian men age 15-24 has grown over tenfold over the past decade. New annual syphilis cases more than tripled among general population since 2014. The UN recruited Brazil to a group of countries that set goals to improve HIV prevention.

Twitter Web App : I reported for The World on current cutbacks to sex education in Brazil, where HIV in youth and syphilis in general population are spiking. Bolsonaro & conservatives have supported the cutbacks, while scientists say they are likely related to STD rise. pri.org/stories/2019-1…

Android : On #Flamengo, I don't have a dog in this fight, but I want to go to sleep tonight so I'll be backing #River.

Also worth reupping this Catherine Osborn story on the greed and negligence behind the deaths of 10 boys at Flamengo's training camp. espn.com/soccer/blog/es…

Twitter Web App : .thomas traumann: the view on Chile from Brazil 2013

Street movements of such intensity are turning points for societys relationship with their elected representatives

Android : I discovered that it’s editorial policy in Brazilian papers like @estadao to refer to men by their last names and women by their first names. Some examples in this thread—the most striking to me was prominent female economists (first names) and their male colleagues (last names). twitter.com/sarahmaslin/st…
